That's right folks. Streaming. We're failing at it. Big time. I'm not talking about the quality of video or commentary, because there are some very, very talented people around here. I'm talking about the ability to advertise the streams we produce.
Certain individuals and companies within our community may be doing an excellent job in providing quality streams and shout-casting, but what is the point if nobody knows that you're actually streaming when you are? With all the time and effort you put into it, wouldn't you like to have more viewers watching the content you produce?
Now that we have all these fantastic cups, leagues and tournaments, why aren't we doing our best to promote the streams covering them?
As it stands now, streams are mostly advertised at random through Tek-9 forum threads, which, let's be honest - unless featuring absolute top teams, and the thread is bumped 100+ times - wont exactly gather the viewer count it deserves. Only occasionally are streams given a news post with an embedded player, and even then it's hard to tell when games start and finish, because there's missing information inside.
On both Tek-9 and CyberGamer we have the ability to create a news post and embed your stream to let people know you're on, but how often is this actually utilized? I rarely know about streams before they're live, and by then it's too late to post about it.
Why aren't we given a heads up? With QuadV's recent return, we learned through a news post on Tek-9 that they'd be doing a weekly Thursday night show, but we have no idea who's casting exactly, what time they'll be on or what games they're showing. There is zero information on their site or on the Vengeance Cup site for that matter. Same goes for KaosTV. Forum posts are made pretty much last minute, and 1000+ viewers is seen as a miracle. I think we can do a lot better then that.
What I'm trying to say is. Please advertise your stuff better. Utilize the resources at your disposal. Ideally Tek-9 would also have a live stream directory on the front page like we do on CG, but until the new site is released, I don't see it happening. So instead, use your social media accounts, like Twitter and Facebook - let us retweet and like the shit out of it. Let the writers from Tek9 and CG know when you'll be on, and what games you're showing. I know it's sometimes hard to schedule things far in advance, but when you finally do know what, when and where, let the rest of us know too!
We all talk about how we can promote CoD4 Promod better, well... I think this is something very fundamental we need to be working on, in order to gain more interest towards our community and the competitive side of things.
