Maybe learn some CSS3, as you can do CSS3 drop shadow on your images in the code, rather than the images, which increases the filesize of them (increasing the load time of the site). Not at all bad.

As you're starting out as well, I may as well give you a tip. Before doing ANY CSS on your site, use Eric Myers, CSS reset. What this does is resets the CSS. It also reduces cross browser compatibility issues on the CSS side of things.
